Connecting to the Internet
Russians love the Internet and in major cities more and more internet cafes are opening up every year. The best places are listed below.
Home or Hotel Dial-up Connection
It is very easy to set up your lap top to connect to the internet from a telephone connection at home or at a hotel. First, buy an internet card (internetovskaya karta) at a local mobile telephone shop (this could also be a combination telephone card / internet card). They usually come in $5 and $10 equivalent units. Then, scratch off the back of the card to get the pin code and follow the directions on the card. Open the Internet or dial up connection settings on your computer. Call the dial-up number, which is a local number. The number can usually only be dialed by a pulse setting on your computer (unless you are in a hotel that has a tone number) so definitely change your dial-up connection from tone to pulse. For your login, enter the number or code on the card labelled "èìÿ ïîëüçîâàòåëÿ" and for the password, enter the number/word listed near the word "ïàðîëü" - this is the area that you scratched off.
