Guide to Russia > Transportation

urban transport urban transport ► The Public Transport Dance

An interesting thing in Russia is the public transportation dance. You see this on every form of transportation and in every Russian city. If you are riding a crowded bus or metro and you come to be about 30 to 60 seconds away from a stop, people will start whispering to each other the following phrase: "Vi vihodite?". This means "are you getting off?", and the answer is either yes or no. If yes, then typically the dance does not occur, both riders just stay put. Now if the answer is no, the dance begins, both riders twirl around each other and change places, then the 1st rider asks the new rider in front of him or herself the same question, and if they get no again, they twirl. This lasts until the 1st rider makes his or her way to the vehicle's exit. Try it, it's fun!
